PROFESSOR OF ARTS MANAGEMENT

for a fixed term post of five years during the period of 1 January 2020 – 31 December 2024, or starting later, based on the contract. The fixed nature of the contract is based on the need for flexibility, as set by the demands to continuously develop education and reform teaching, and on the fact that the content of the relatively new post still taking shape. The post is located at the Sibelius Academy Faculty of Music Education, Jazz, and Folk Music in the Department of Arts Management, and the MuTri Doctoral School.

Working environment

The University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) was launched in 2013 upon the merging of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy and Theatre Academy Helsinki. Uniarts Helsinki is a creative community of 2,000 students and approximately 650 person-years. The Sibelius Academy is the highest-level music educator in Finland, training artists skilled in independent artistic work, teachers, and other music professionals.

The post of Professor is located at the Faculty of Music Education, Jazz, and Folk Music, where the education in Arts Management programme is also located. The Arts Management master’s degree programme educates professionals for the growing and evolving culture industry. The English-language master-level education includes the arts, all the way from dance to music and theatre to museums. After graduation, students will have work opportunities in leading and production positions in the public, private and third sector. Doctoral education for arts management began in 2011 and it provides skills for demanding research, development and leadership tasks that require in-depth expertise.

The education is administered by the Department of Arts Management, which is a unit consisting of the professor to be appointed, one lecturer, numerous part-time teachers and approximately 40 master- and doctoral-level students. The department is in charge of planning, implementing and assessing arts management teaching as well as research and doctoral education in arts management at the University of the Arts Helsinki. You will be surrounded by an international, multidisciplinary learning environment that is in close interaction with the surrounding society.

Tasks of Professor of Arts Management

General duties of the Professor

The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts stipulates that Professors:

 	Conduct and publish research representing their field
 	Lead, foster and develop education within their field in cooperation with other university faculty members
 	Provide students with study guidance and be sufficiently at their disposal
 	Participate in the student admissions process and study assessments
 	Provide the university with the necessary reports on teaching, research and/or artistic activities
 	Complete the required administrative duties associated with the post

Specific tasks and responsibilities of the Professor Arts Management

1.     The Professor shall conduct research and publish research nationally and internationally; manage, coordinate and participate in research cooperation projects together with important instances in the field; and develop research at the University of the Arts Helsinki.

2.     The Professor shall instruct and guide doctoral students and participate in master-level teaching and supervising theses. The Professor shall participate in developing organizing, and coordinating arts management education, both at the University of the Arts Helsinki and in international cooperation networks. This will include cooperation with other teaching, research and administrative staff.

3.     The Professor shall develop interaction between arts management and other educational programmes at the University of the Arts Helsinki. In addition, he/she will advance the pedagogic development work of the multidisciplinary programme. The Professor shall also, for their part, ensure that the latest development and research information is applied to all education levels at the Sibelius Academy and throughout the entire University of the Arts Helsinki, as well as in continuing education and teaching for Open University students.

Selection criteria

In addition to what is stipulated in the Universities Act and the University of the Arts Helsinki Staff Regulations, the post of Professor of Arts Management requires

 	A suitable scholarly doctoral degree and research experience academic qualifications
 	In-depth knowledge of the multidisciplinary field of arts-management, which can be demonstrated through particular expertise in one of the following fields of arts management: management and leadership, culture politics, cultural planning, arts marketing, fundraising and sponsorship, audience engagement and accessibility of art
 	Good teaching skills and the ability to provide research-based teaching
 	Demonstrated success in supervising master’s theses
 	Experience in organizing doctoral education and supervising doctoral dissertations
 	The ability to develop education in the university community together with cooperation partners, also internationally
 	Motivation and commitment towards developing education and research

A person with a scholarly doctoral degree who does not fulfil all of the above-mentioned criteria may also be selected for the post if he/she is particularly distinguished in relation to all other criteria.

The applicant’s competence, skills and aptitude will be assessed in relation to the demands set by the tasks of the Professor and working environment. These are evaluated on the basis of the documents delivered by the applicant as well as a separate demonstration of proficiency. Language skills will also be evaluated in the demonstration of proficiency. The evaluation process may include a personal assessment by an external partner if needed. The demonstration of proficiency will be arranged in Helsinki in December 2019.

Language proficiency

The teaching languages of the post are Finnish and English. The task includes supervising primarily English-language theses. From Finnish applicants, we require excellent Finnish or Swedish and English as well as good command of the second national language. From non-Finnish applicants, we require an excellent command of English. In accordance with the Staff Regulations of the University of the Arts Helsinki, the rector may decide on deviating from language requirements. Skills are assessed in a demonstration of proficiency.

In addition, Finnish candidates are required to present one of the following certificates of proficiency in Finnish or Swedish:

1) A certificate signed by a member or deputy member of the State Board of Language Examinations, or in another manner prescribed by the Decree on the Demonstration of Knowledge of the Finnish and Swedish Languages in State Administration (481/2003) (e.g. by passing the language test included in the basic curriculum of a university-level institution);

2) A certificate issued by a professor, assistant professor, or lecturer who teaches the language in question at a Finnish university-level institution;

3) A matriculation examination certificate indicating a pass in the language in question

Salary

The salary is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The task-specific salary component is on level 8. In addition, a personal salary component will be paid. The monthly salary at the beginning of the employment will be approximately EUR 5,200–5,800. The salary will be specified on the basis of the elected person’s qualifications and work experience. The starting salary will be agreed in connection with other terms of employment.

Recruitment process

The recruitment committee will assess the eligibility and suitability of the applicants based on the applications, on the demonstration of proficiency, the statements of at least two experts outside the University of the Arts Helsinki, and any other available materials. The Sibelius Academy’s Academic Council comments the selection proposal made by the recruitment committee. Following this, the Dean of the Sibelius Academy makes the selection proposal to the Rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki, who then makes the final appointment of the Professor. The recruitment process is expected to be completed in December 2019.

The University of the Arts Helsinki plans to implement tenure tracks for the teaching and researcher staff during 2019. The University of the Arts Helsinki’s tenure track system will consist of professor and lecturer tenure tracks. The University of the Arts of Helsinki reserves the right to evaluate the open position’s placement on the tenure track upon the completion of the tenure track criteria.
