Troubled Waters. The Mediterranean in the Early Middle Ages

Turku, Kaivokatu 12
10.3.2017 klo 14:15
---------------------------------------------------------

The Turku Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (TUCEMEMS) organises a
half-day seminar on the history of the Early Middle Ages on Friday 10 March 2017
at 2.15 PM in the Janus-auditorium (Kaivokatu 12, Turku).

During the restless centuries of the Early Middle Ages, the Vikings were feared
not only in the northern parts of Europe, but as far as in the Mediterranean.
They raided the Iberian Peninsula and attacked Italy, the North Africa and
perhaps even Byzantium. At the same time, what had once been the centre of the
civilised world, Rome, went through a political turmoil, navigating the rough
storms of the period in search of a new direction.

The half-day seminar organised by TUCEMEMS proposes two presentations on Early
Middle Ages by two leading experts on the period. Students can have two notes to
their participation/academic pass. Welcome all!

Programme:
14.15 Prof. Ian Wood: The Transformation of the Roman World, from Empire to
Ecclesiastical States
15.15 Coffee
16.00 Dr. Ann Christys: Vikings in the South

Welcome all!
