SOVAKO-kurssi 25.11.2016: Master Class with Professor Rogers Brubaker, UCLA

Time: Friday 25.11.2016, from 10 am to 14.45 pm

Place: Swedish School of Social Science, Snellmaninkatu 12, Room 234.

On Friday the 25th of November, Professor Brubaker will teach a Master Class for
Ph.D. students, hosted by the Westermarck Society and SOVAKO.

The one-day Master Class is organized in collaboration with CEREN, the Centre
for Research on Ethic Relations and Nationalism and Department of Social
Research, University of Helsinki. The Master Class focuses on Professor
Brubaker’s just-published book Trans: Gender and Race in an Age of Unsettled
Identities and on the lead chapter (“Difference and Inequality”) from the
2015 book Grounds for Difference.

The Master Class is divided into two sessions, one, slightly shorter, session on
“Difference and Inequality” and one slightly longer session on Trans. As
preparation for the Master Class, Professor Brubaker invites the participants to
prepare and submit in beforehand a short written text (either a brief
discussion/critique of one of the readings, or a brief precis of their own
research, 2-3 single-spaced pages), to give him a bit of advance notice on what
is of interest to them. Instructions for application Ten Ph.D. students will be
admitted, on basis of application.

Deadline for applications is the 9th of October. The application should consist
of an abstract describing the ongoing Ph.D. project (150 words) and a short
letter about how the Master Class will be helpful for that project.

Send your application before 14th of October to: pekka.j.rantanen at uta.fi For the
selected students the deadline for the short papers is 7th of November.
