Welcome to the 14th Annual Collegium lecture on Wednesday, May 25 2016 at
4.15 p.m. in Tieteiden talo, hall 104 (Kirkkokatu 6). This year the lecture
will be delivered by Professor Joan Wallach Scott (IAS, Princeton), with the
title “French secularism (laïcité): the new and the old”.

Joan Wallach Scott is Professor Emerita in the School of Social Science at the
Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton New Jersey).  She is the author of the
classic article “Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis,” and of
many books and articles in the fields of French history, women’s and gender
history, and feminist theory.  Her most recent books are The Politics of the
Veil, and The Fantasy of Feminist History.  She is currently at work on a study
of the history of secularism, gender inequality, and the creation of modern
Western nation states.
