Finnish Mobilities
28 September - 1 October 2016, Turku, Finland
Call for papers
International migrations have created new types of connections between sending,
receiving and third countries and have created many transnational practices and
linkages. The mobility of individuals and groups, and their associated cultural
practices and institutions have been and still are widely debated in migration
scholarship. Questions relating to migrant integration in a new social context
are again acute due to the growth of international mobility.
Finns in Finland and elsewhere have had their own share of these phenomena in
the remote past, as well as in the present day. The largest waves of emigration
from Finland were to North America at the turn of the 20th century and to Sweden
during the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, Finns have increasingly moved to new
destinations in Europe and worldwide. The backgrounds and experiences of Finnish
migrants have been diverse.
The Finn Forum XI conference will target these issues from multiple
perspectives, including:
transnational connections and practices
governmental policies and legal regulation
migrant integration and social institutions
experiences of different migrant groups, including language groups (Finnish,
Swedish, Sami), minorities (e.g. Roma) and social classes (e.g., farmers,
workers, scholars, sportsmen, missionaries)
migrant media
generational differences
transnational memories and narratives
mixed ethnic identities
The aim of the conference is to gather scholars, experts, and others interested
in the destinies and experiences of Finns and Finnish related people in North
America, Northern Europe, and other regions where Finns have settled. We welcome
contributions from various disciplines, including cultural and art studies,
geography, history, linguistics and sociology.
Proposals for presentations (150 words) and special sessions (250 words), and
participant CVs should be sent by email to the coordinator of the conference,
Mr. Jari Nikkola by January 31, 2016. For additional inquiries about the
program and registration, as well as fees, please contact coordinator Mr. Jari
Nikkola.
