Materially mediated world. Politics of display and knowledge from cabinets of
curiosity to the digital era, 28–29 September, Turku

The Department of European and World History at the University of Turku will
host a two-day symposium on the intertwinement of materiality and knowledge
production in exhibitions, museums and collections on 28 and 29 September.

The symposium will be opened by Professor Tony Bennett’s keynote lecture
“Collecting, Ordering, Governing”. Professor Bennett has wide ranging
expertise on the history and politics of museums. He is widely acknowledged
specialist of cultural and social theory, especially questions regarding
multicultural societies and cultural interaction.

Researchers from different disciplines such as history, art history, museum
studies, ethnology and archaeology are encouraged to present papers on their
ongoing or completed research. Twenty minutes will be reserved for the
presentation of each paper and ten minutes for discussion.

Themes may include but are not restricted to:

- How knowledge has been produced by displaying objects in different historical
and cultural contexts?

- How objects have been appropriated and re-contextualized when collected and
exhibited?

- How different conditions and cultural dynamics have influenced the practices
of interpreting material cultures?

- What kind of agency is involved in knowledge production? How human and
non-human agents interact?

Please, send your abstract (200-300 words) to Leila Koivunen (leikoi(at)utu.fi)
or Taina Syrjämaa (taisyr(at)utu.fi) by Thursday 30 April. The programme will
be published in May.

The symposium aims at strengthening the co-operation of Nordic scholars. It
continues the series of workshops on exhibition materialities, arranged in
Uppsala (2012) and Berlin (2014). All new and old participants are most welcome!
The symposium is free of charge.
