Linguistics Meets Book History:

Seeking New Approaches

(A Pragmatics on the Page Symposium)

24-25 October 2014

University of Turku, Finland

CALL FOR PAPERS & PARTICIPATION

We invite submissions from researchers working on the interplay of the
verbal/linguistic and the visual/material in historical texts, including both
manuscripts and printed materials. This two-day symposium is a forum for
discussing the methods, techniques and tools used for research which combines
pragmatics, philology, book studies and/or the digital humanities. Our goal is
to encourage the exchange and development of 'BEST PRACTICES' in this
interdisciplinary arena.

Confirmed keynote speakers:

❧ Daniel Wakelin (University of Oxford, England)

Daniel's research focuses on the material remains of English literature c.
1300-1525, and what they reveal about writing habits and reading habits.

❧ Colette Moore (University of Washington, USA)

Colette uses methodology primarily from historical pragmatics, sociolinguistics,
and stylistics in her research, incorporating manuscript data as well.

❧ Jukka Tyrkkö (University of Tampere, Finland)

Jukka works on historical corpus linguistics and book history, finding
intellectual synergies between the two.

We welcome 20-minute papers addressing methodological topics, or describing
tools and techniques. Preference will be given to research addressing both the
verbal/linguistic and the visual/material in historical texts. Any researchers
working on the interface of linguistics / philology & book history / material
culture are welcome to attend, whether or not you present a paper. The symposium
will conclude with a Round Table Discussion.
