CALL FOR PAPERS

The Twelfth Gustav Wasa Seminarium

Gender, Regions, and the State: New Perspectives on the Reformation

Jyväskylä, 5–6 June 2014

The Reformation in early modern Europe is considered one of the defining moments
of the era, but the dust hasn’t settled around its disputable themes. During
hundreds of years of Reformation historiography, the research has gone through
substantial shifts in perspectives, quantity, quality, motives, and methods.

Current Reformation research is characterized by fragmentation. Increasingly
scholars speak of Reformations than the Reformation. This current perspective
has deemed it important to see the sixteenth-century reformations not as an
event, but a long process launched already at the end of the 15th century and
extending well to the 17th century. New research has also uncovered and shed
light on new questions, such as social conflict, urban and rural environments,
and the experiences of non-elite groups, gender, as well as the circulation and
printing of books.

The twelfth annual Gustav Wasa seminar discusses these and related themes with
main interest in long-term influences of the Reformation, seen as a process, and
the diversity of the Reformation. Bearing in mind the variety of past and
present approaches in the Reformation historiography, we also welcome
methodological discussion. The seminar aims to form a multidimensional view of
the theme under discussion, thus allowing for several different and specific
approaches.

Proposed themes for papers:

-          The Reformation from the gender perspective

-          The relationship between the Reformation and folk religion

-          The Reformation and the state

-          What kind of sources and methods can be utilized and how in
the research of the Reformation

In addition to proposed subjects, any papers pertaining to the aforementioned
themes are welcome.

Those interested in a presenting paper at the conference are invited to submit a
proposal Jari.Eilola at jyu.fi  by the 30 April 2014. Proposals should include the
following: the participant’s name and affiliation (if applicable), a title and
300-word abstract, email and contact information, and A/V requests for the
presentation (we recommend using Power Point).
