Call for Papers
Workshop on Poor Relief through History: A Comparative Perspective
Date: October 9, 2012
Hosting Institution: Historical Economics and Development Group (HEDG),
Department of Business and Economics, University of Southern Denmark
Local Organizers: Inge Mønster-Kjær (Center for Welfare State Research) and
Paul Sharp (HEDG)

The aim of this workshop is to gather scholars from a variety of disciplinary
backgrounds working on the broad theme of poor relief in history. Possible
topics include charitable donations and almshouses, the development of public
welfare support systems, and the underlying reasons why societies organize
poor relief to different degrees and in different ways across time and space.
The emphasis will be on an informal gathering, where participants seek to
learn from each other and find possibilities for collaboration, and to gain
understanding of the state of the art of research in the field.
We will strive to accommodate as many speakers as possible. Accepted papers
will receive 25 minutes each (15 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for
discussion). However, in the interest of avoiding parallel sessions, the
presentation time may be shortened.
The organizers can offer lunch, dinner and other refreshments on the day of
the meeting, but hotels and travel must be covered by the participants
themselves.
Prospective speakers should submit a one page abstract and a short CV to Paul
Sharp (pauls at sam.sdu.dk) no later than August 31, 2012. Notification of
acceptance will be given by the middle of August 2012. Full papers are due by
September 1, 2012.
This workshop is sponsored by HEDG (the Historical Economics and Development
Group) at the Department of Business and Economics, University of Southern
Denmark, the Center for Welfare State Research, University of Southern
Denmark, and the Doctoral Programme in History, Area Studies and Archaeology.
