Professor Janet Hartley (London School of Economics and Political
Science) will give a visiting lecture

“Old Finland in the Early Nineteenth Century: Manning the Russian
Navy”

Professor Hartley's main fields of specialty are Russian history in
the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Her books include,
among many others, Russia in the Age of the Enlightenment (editor
with R. Bartlett), (1990); Finland and Poland in the Russian Empire:
A Comparative Study (editor with M. Branch), (1995); A Social History
of the Russian Empire 1650-1825 (1999); Russia, 1762-1815: Military
Power, the State and the People (Greenwood Press, 2008).

The event is organized by  The Finnish Society for Eighteenth Century
Studies; Research Committee History Research Community, Department of
Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies; Research project
'Connections, associations and innovations. The case of fortress
Sveaborg, its foundation, socio-economical impact and innovative role
cs. 1730-1809'.
