Title: “How China’s Wartime Past is Shaping its Present and Future” 

Presenter: Professor Rana Mitter of the University of Oxford

Place: Lecture Hall 4, Publicum, University of Turku, Finland

Dr Rana Mitter is Professor of the History and Politics of Modern
China at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of St Cross College.
His research has focused on the historical development of Chinese
nationalism, with a particular interest in the Sino-Japanese War of
the 1930s and 1940s, and its effects on shaping contemporary China.
He is the author of The Manchurian Myth: Nationalism, Resistance and
Collaboration in Modern China (California, 2000) and A Bitter
Revolution: China’s Struggle with the Modern World (Oxford, 2004),
for which he was named Young Academic Author of the Year by the UK
Times Higher Education Supplement in 2005, and he co-edited (with
Sheila Jager) Ruptured Histories: War and Memory in the Post-Cold War
(Harvard, 2007) and (with Patrick Major) Across the Blocs: Cold War
Cultural and Social History (Frank Cass, 2004). His latest book is
Modern China: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, 2008). His scholarly
articles have appeared in journals including The China Quarterly,
Modern China, and The Historical Journal. He has won several external
research grants, including a five-year Leverhulme Research Leadership
Award (2007-12) and a Philip Leverhulme Prize (2004). He presents and
contributes regularly to programmes on historical and political topics
on television and radio, including on the History Channel, and Night
Waves and The Sunday Feature on BBC Radio 3 in the UK.
