Keskiajan ja uuden ajan alun oikeuslähteet -symposio, Turku,
12.2.2010
Symposium on Medieval and Early Modern Legal Court Records, Turku, 12
February, 2010
Inspired by the recent publication of 'Records of the Salem
Witch-Hunt' (Rosenthal et al. 2009, CUP), the Department of English
at the University of Turku in collaboration with Turku Centre of
Medieval and Early Modern Studies (TUCEMEMS) will host a symposium on
the use of historical court records in current research in the
Humanities.
The symposium will be launched at 1 p.m. on Friday, 12 February,
2010, by a keynote address by Professor Bernard Rosenthal (State
University of New York, Binghamton) on “Stories that Salem Documents
Tell”. The address will be followed by 20-minute paper presentations
(15 + 5 minutes), a final discussion, and dinner (self-sponsored).
The language of the symposium is English.
Papers are invited especially on topics addressing methodological
issues, for example relating to challenges/problems raised by
historical court records in research. Presentations on any medieval
and early modern materials are welcome. It is hoped that the
presentations will encourage comparisons across languages, countries
and different types of proceedings.
We hope to receive your abstract (up to one page) by December 31st,
2009, by e-mail addressed to matti.peikola[at]utu.fi. A second
circular will be sent in early January including further information
about the venue, programme, and possible publication of the papers.
Limited accommodation is available at the University of Turku
guesthouse Villa Hortus. Please contact Matti Peikola for details.
We look forward to seeing you in Turku.
