Lecture:
'Free Trade Nation: Globalization and Consumer Power in Historical
Perspective'
Professor Frank Trentmann
Birkbeck College, University of London
17th September, 10 o’clock, University of Helsinki, the Small
Festival Hall (University of Helsinki, main building, Fabianinkatu
33, 4th floor)
Welcome!
Professor Trentmann will give a public lecture concerning the rise
and fall of Free Trade as a mass movement in U.K. aimed at
multi-disciplinary audience bringing together economists, other
social scientists, historians and perhaps also civil servants and
people from GMOs. In the battle for Free Trade agricultural products
played an important role. The discussion focused strongly on, how
consumers became political subjects and how their moral visions of
the world changed. The current discussion over globalisation could
learn a lot from historical understanding of globalisation process in
the past.
Professor Trentmann has published very widely in the journals of
consumer history and edited volumes. He has also co-authored several
books. Among his latest publications are Consuming Cultures, Global
Perspectives: Historical Trajectories, Transnational Exchanges
(Oxford and New York: Berg, 2006, edited with John Brewer); The
Making of the Consumer: Knowledge, Power and Identity in the Modern
World (Oxford and New York: Berg, 2006, editor); Civil Society: A
Reader in History, Theory and Global Politics (Palgrave Macmillan,
2005, edited with John A. Hall).
Trentmann's new book Free Trade Nation: Commerce, Consumption, and
Civil Society in Modern Britain was published in February 2008 by
Oxford University Press.
