The Beginnings of the Greenlandic Novel
Nation, Identity and Subaltern Articulation in an Arctic Colony

Greenland at the beginning of the 20th century: A colonial country marked by
power asymmetries. At the same time young Greenlanders start travelling to
Denmark in order to receive education, a Greenlandic fictional literature is
emerging in the Danish colony, closed off from the outside world until after
World War II.

Ebbe Volquardsen is keeping the track of the representatives of an early
Greenlandic educational elite, which the authors belong to. He asks: How can
literary writing and publishing work out in such a constellation? Which
power mechanisms do Greenlanders have to circumnavigate, in order to
establish themselves as actors within literary discourse? The author
analyzes the four earliest novels by Greenlandic authors, published between
1914 and 1938, and places them within a cultural historical context? What
impact do these novels have within the discourse on nation building and the
search for identity.

Ebbe Volquardsen studied Scandinavian Studies, European Ethnology and
Political Science in Berlin and Copenhagen and is working as a research
assistant at Humboldt-Universität´s Department for Northern European Studies
in Berlin.
