mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">Fred M. Donner is Professor of Near Eastern History at the
University of Chicago.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Donner has been a prolific author of early Islamic history. His first book was
<i>The Early Islamic Conquests</i> (1981). Close work with the sources of the early period of Islamic history culminated in his
<i>Narratives of Islamic Origins</i> (1998). The book attempts to explain how concerns for legitimacy in the developing community shaped the themes of Arabic historiography.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:"Garamond",serif;mso-bidi-font-family:"Gentium Plus";
mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">Furthermore, he concluded that Islam’s roots lay in what can
be called the “Believers’ movement,” which was a stringently monotheistic and pietistic movement that also included Jews and Christians. These ideas he developed in his
<i>Muhammad and the Believers</i> (2010).</span></p>
