<pre>Dear all,
We kindly wish to bring the Helsinki Archaeology Seminar (HAS) to your
attention.
The University of Helsinki contains quite a number of archaeologists
—or scholars using archaeology— among its researchers, a considerable
number of who are not directly linked to the Institute of Archaeology.
This dispersal of archaeologists in various faculties and departments
across the university (e.g. classics, biblical studies, museum
studies) demonstrates the importance of material culture and —so, our
field— for exploring past and modern societies. This dispersal,
however, also creates obvious communicative borders between the
different archaeologists spread out across the university.
Helsinki Archaeology Seminar aims to cross this border. It aims to
become a forum where archaeologists can inform one another about their
research, where ideas and insights about new approaches or current
fieldwork are shared, and where new collaborations are initiated.
Additionally, it may help strengthen archaeology’s position as a
research field within the University of Helsinki.
What does this mean in practice? Helsinki Archaeology Seminar will be
organized on the 1st Friday of each month, starting from December 2015
till May 2016. It is intended for researchers and students with an
interest in archaeology. To make the seminar open for both Finnish and
international scholars, the preferred language is English. The seminar
will be held at 16-18 h in the lecture room of the Institute of
Archaeology [Unioninkatu 38, lecture room F115], and consists of one
presentation of ca. 30 minutes with discussion afterwards. After the
seminar, we hope everyone joins us for drinks at one of the bars in
Helsinki to continue discussion and collaboration.
If you wish to present a paper on one of the seminars, please contact
one of us (<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:marja.ahola@helsinki.fi">marja.ahola@helsinki.fi</a> or <a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:rick.bonnie@helsinki.fi">rick.bonnie@helsinki.fi</a>). And we
hope to see you at the first seminar in December!
Please send this forward to anyone who might be interested in
participating in the seminar.
Best wishes,
Marja Ahola & Rick Bonnie
