The participants include experts of Byzantine, Russian and Western European chronicle studies, which is essential in the understanding of the wider context of the ways the medieval people saw their place in history. The emphasis is in the way which the chronicles view time and the part that human beings play in it. Most of the papers will deal with medieval sources, but there will also be pre- and post-medieval approaches to the chronicle, a genre with long roots and appearances past its bloom. The conference is organized by the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies and it also celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Finnish Society of Byzantine studies which is one of the main co-organizers of the symposium. Other co-organizing partners include Niilo Helander’s Foundation and Glossa – Society for Finnish medieval studies.

***

Konferenssi perehdyttää keskiaikaisten kronikoiden maailmaan lajin omasta näkökulmasta käsin tarkastellen kronikoita ennen kaikkea historian kirjoittamisen muotona. Kansainväliselle tiedeyhteisölle konferenssi tarjoaa kauas eriytyneitä tutkimustraditioita toisiinsa lähentävän keskustelufoorumin saattaen yhteen sekä läntisen että itäisen traditioiden tutkijoita: mukana on sekä Länsi-Euroopan latinankielisen, Bysantin kreikankielisen, sekä erittäin omaleimaisen venäläisen kronikkatradition tutkijoita. Konferenssiesitelmät valottavat mielenkiintoisella tavalla keskiaikaista maailmankuvaa pureutumalla kronikoiden tapaan kuvata ihmisen suhdetta aikaan: menneisyyteen, nykyhetkeen ja tulevaisuuteen. Esitelmät tutustuttavat tyypillisesti keskiaikaan liitettyyn genreen myös laajemmin, tarjoten näkökulmia myöhäisantiikista aina modernille ajalle saakka. Esitelmät ovat englanninkielisiä.

Konferenssin järjestää Helsingin yliopiston tutkijakollegium, ja sen keskeisimmät yhteistyökumppanit ovat Niilo Helanderin säätiö, Suomen keskiajantutkimuksen seura Glossa ry., sekä Suomen Bysantintutkimuksen seura ry, jonka 30-vuotista taivalta konferenssi samalla juhlistaa.

***********

Maria Soukkio

Programme coordinator

Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies

PO BOX 4

FIN 00014 University of Helsinki

Finland

tel. +358 (0)9 19124974, +358 (0)50 4154503

email: maria.soukkio@helsinki.fi
