<span style="font-size: 12pt;">MASTER THESIS / PRO GRADU PROJECTS</span>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"></span>
<div>How bacteria manipulate host cell signaling?<br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Master thesis / pro gradu projects are available in the cellular microbiology-laboratory of</div>
<div>Docent Arto Pulliainen, at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku.<br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>The cellular microbiology-laboratory takes a multidisciplinary approach with molecular</div>
<div>biology, biochemistry, cell biology, microscopy, structural biology, proteomics, next</div>
<div>generation sequencing and functional genomics to understand bacterial pathogenesis. We</div>
<div>aim primarily to identify bacterial toxins/effector proteins and their variants, to understand</div>
<div>how the toxins/effector proteins are secreted, how the toxins/effector proteins recognize</div>
<div>and enter the target host cell and how the toxins/effector proteins manipulate host cell</div>
<div>signaling to ultimately influence the disease progression. Our ultimate goal is to gain</div>
<div>insights that allow development of new antimicrobials for emerging antibiotic resistant</div>
<div>bacteria. To this end, we also utilize molecular docking simulations and high-throughput</div>
<div>small molecule screening to facilitate structure-based drug discovery.<br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>The projects are currently streamlined as master thesis / pro gradu projects, but also</div>
<div>provide an excellent opportunity to pursue further postgraduate research aiming for a PhD</div>
<div>thesis.<br>
</div>
