<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The focus of this book is the position of immigrants in the labour markets, since this is a central indicator of the social status of immigrants and ethnic groups. Employment is one of the main foundations for the successful
integration of immigrants. What has often been raised in research on and discussions of the issue in societies is the fact that it is more difficult for immigrants to find a job, expecially a job that corresponds to their educational background, than it is
for the native population. As a result, the former often have significantly higher unemployment rates than the latter. This is naturally connected to economic cycles, which affect the demands for labour during both boom times and recessions.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">This qualitative PhD study examines the lived experiences of eight young individuals who moved from one country to another several times during their childhood because of their parents' profession, hence the term hypermobility
in the title. As international, workbased mobility is increasing, it is of critical importance to observe how it affects childhood in general and how the children experience it in particular. The various socio-emotional aspects related to children’s hypermobility
– often overlooked in discourses surrounding internationalization – are examined.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The rising calls for closed borders and nationalism necessitate increasing awareness of the diverse ways of being and belonging in societies and communities. Although based on a small sample of informants, this study
opens a window for examining one way of inhabiting this world through the experiences of young mobile individuals. The findings enhance the current understanding of what it is like to grow up in the midst of international relocations in a world predominantly
defines by sedentary norms and majority. The study’s conclusions should also prove to be particularly valuable to parents who consider or pursue an international career and for educators who work in schools with a high student turnover.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Pesäpalloa sanotaan syystäkin Suomen kansallispeliksi. Vaikka ensimmäiset pelit käytiin pian itsenäistymisemme jälkeen, ovat pesäpallon juuret vuosisatojen takana. Maassamme pelattiin kymmeniä erilaisia pallopelejä 1800-luvulla.
Jo Aleksis Kiven Seitsemässä veljeksessä lyödään kartuilla kiekkoa. Tunnetuin pallopeli 1800-luvulla oli kuningaspallo. Tämä peli oli Lauri ”Tahko” Pihkalalle hyvin tuttu.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Suomen itsenäistyttyä Tahko Pihkala halusi pelin, joka kehittäisi monipuolisesti fyysisiä ominaisuuksia ja olisi myös taktisesti vaativa. Soveltaen eri kotimaisten pallopelien ja amerikkalaisen baseballin parhaita puolia
hän kehitti pesäpallon 1920-luvun alussa. Suomi oli pesäpallon syntyaikoina kansalaissodan jälkeen jakautunut, ja Tahko Pihkala halusi yhdistää kansaa omalla pelillään. Tässä hän onnistuikin.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Suomesta on maamme itsenäisyyden aikana muuttanut ulkomaille lähes miljoona henkeä. Mukanaan he ovat vieneet pesäpallon, jota on pelattu ja pelataan edelleen useilla mantereilla. Aikojen kuluessa säännöt ovat hieman eriytyneet,
mutta pelin idea Tahkon esittämällä tavalla on säilynyt. Joissain maissa peli-into suomalaisten keskuudessa on hiipunut, toisissa maissa taas uusien sukupolvien ja paikallisen kantaväestön innostuminen on pitänyt pelin hengissä. Kirjassa tarkastellaan maittain
peliä ja myös siihen liittyviä kulttuurisia eroja. Suomessa tiukan pelin jälkeen lähdetään usein kiukusta puhisten kotiin, mutta ulkomailla joukkueet saattavat mennä yhdessä grillaamaan ja keskustelemaan pelitapahtumista. Eikös urheilun tarkoituksena olekin
yhdistää eikä erottaa?<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">This book presents results of a survey conducted with international students. They were asked how much they worked in Turku during studies, and how successful they were in gaining employment in Turku. They responded also
to questions about their social ties, language skills and a general feeling of being at home.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Pienenä tyttönä suomalaisten vanhempiensa mukana Cobaltista Kanadasta Neuvosto-Karjalaan muuttanut Vieno Zlobina kertoo suomalaisen ihanneyhteisön, Säde-kommuunan, tarinan sen perustamisesta kommuunan kukoistuksen aikaan
ja edelleen lopulliseen tuhoon. Vienon perhe ja muut Säteen kommunaarit kuuluivat siihen noin 6500 suomalaisen joukkoon, joka 1920-30 -lukujen aikana muutti Pohjois-Amerikasta Neuvostoliittoon rakentamaan sosialistista yhteiskuntaa. Lupaavan ja täynnä intoa
olevan alun jälkeen muuttajat joutuivat kohtaamaan neuvostoyhteiskunnan terrorin. Säteen miespuolisista kommunaareista vain kaksi selvisi noista ajoista hengissä. Säteen tarinan ohella Vieno kertoo suomalaisesta Neuvosto-Karjalasta, jonka elon kaari noudatteli
samaa rataa Säteen tarinan kanssa. Kukoistusta seurasi kovaotteinen loppu.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Kirja on myös Vieno Zlobinan elämäntarina, jossa hän kuvaa tarkasti lapsen ja naisen näkökulmasta arjen asioita, koulua, harrastuksia, opiskeluaan ja kielikysymyksiä. Uutterien vanhempien sinnikäs tytär pinnisteli yli
vaikeuksien ja teki hienon uran kielitieteilijänä ja yliopiston opettajana Neuvostoliitossa. Nyt Virossa Pärnussa asuva 97-vuotias Vieno Zlobina haluaa jakaa vanhempiensa muistolle omistetun tarinansa kytkettyinä Neuvosto-Karjalan historian vaiheisiin.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">As a young girl, Vieno Zlobina moved with her parents from Cobalt in Canada to Soviet Karelia, and tells the story of an idealistic Finnish community, the Säde Commune (säde means´ray of light´), from its foundation,
through the years when it flourished, to its final destruction. Vieno’s family, like all the members of the Säde Commune, belonged to a wave of around 6500 people who left North America for the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s, to build the new socialist
society. After an enthusiastic and promising beginning, the migrants gradually came face to face with the Soviet regime of terror. Only two of the men in the original community survived. Parallel with this history, Vieno tells the wider story of the Finnish
Soviet Republic in Karelia, a story which traces the same arc as that of the Commune: a flourishing beginning, and a violent end.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">In Vieno Zlobina’s autobiography, she offers from the perspective of the women and children a detailed account of everyday life: school, leisure, studies, and language questions. The determined daughter of hard-working
parents, she overcame the obstacles in her way to become a respected linguist and university teacher in the Soviet Union. Now 97, and living in Pärnu in Estonia, Vieno Zlobina honours her parents by sharing the Commune’s story, within the wider context of
the history of Soviet Karelia.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

eroja ja stereotyyppisiä odotuksia suomalaisten ja muiden välille. Tässä teoksessa käydään läpi suomalaisten naisten ja islamilaisen kulttuurin alueelta tulleiden miesten liittoja osana laajempaa yhteiskunnallista keskustelua. Pariskunnat pyrkivät rakentamaan
arkeaan kahden erilaisen taustan kodeissa, mutta perheiden elämään vaikuttavat paitsi kulttuurierot myös väistämättä ulkopuolelta tulevat odotukset islamilaisuudesta tai suomalaisesta, tasa-arvoisesta naisesta.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

kytkeytyvät kerronnoissa tiiviisti yhteen ja näyttäytyvät diskursiivisina, puhujasta käsin rakentuvina ilmiöinä.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Tämä tutkimus valottaa Kauhavan vastaanottokeskuksen ensimmäistä vuotta. Siinä käsitellään sitä, miten vastaanottokeskus Kauhavalle tuli ja miten se otettiin vastaan sekä miten kauhavalaisten ja vastaanottokeskuksen suhde

sujuvoittaa maahanmuuttajaoppilaiden kohdalle? Mitkä seikat nousevat esiin haastateltavien kokemuksista? Julkaisussa esitetään hankkeen aikana saatu tieto sekä ratkaisumalleja, joita voidaan käyttää sellaisenaan tai soveltaa tulevaisuuden koulusiirtymiä suunniteltaessa.
Julkaisussa pohditaan siirtymävaiheen merkitystä myös laajemmin eri asiantuntijoiden kirjoitusten kautta. Huomiota kiinnitetään saamelaispedagogiikkaan ja koulusensitiivisyyteen, onnistuneeseen koulupolkuun sekä koulusiirtymien merkitykseen elämänkaaressa

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Invandrarnas antal har ökat markant i Finland under den senaste tiden, också i Jakobstadsregionen. Detta leder till utmaningar för alla som berörs av invandringen, för såväl invandrarna själva som för myndigheter, beslutsfattare
och företrädare för näringslivet samt övriga kommuninvånare. Tanken med utredningen Behöver vi ett invandrarråd? Är att utröna huruvida det finns förutsättningar för ett funktionellt samarbetsorgan i Jakobstadsregionen för dessa parter och i vilken form ett
eventuellt samarbetsorgan kunde gestaltas.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Siirtolaisuusinstituutti on vuodesta 1975 lähtien järjestänyt viiden vuoden välein Muuttoliikesymposiumin. Vuoden 2015 yhdeksännen symposiumin teemana oli Maassamuutto ja siirtolaisuus kehityksen moottoreina? Näkökulmia
Suomen alueelliseen ja väestölliseen tulevaisuuteen. Esitelmöitsijöinä ja alustajina olivat alan asiantuntijat ja päätöksentekijät.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Symposiumissa keskityttiin erityisesti maahanmuuttoon ja Suomen sisäisiin muuttoliikkeisiin. Vuoden 2015 syksyllä tapahtuneen laajan pakolaiskeskustelun vuoksi muut muuttoliikkeiden muodot jäivät vähemmälle huomiolle.
Symposium nosti kuitenkin esiin myös muuttoliikkeiden muita näkökulmia ja vaikutuksia.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">A Century of Strife: The Finnish organization of Canada was written by the Finnish Canadian Archivist and historian Edward W. Laine (1940-2003). The study was almost completed by Laine, and has been accordingly edited
by professor Auvo Kostiainen for publication by the Migration Institute of Finland in Turku.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Canadan Suomalainen Järjestö, the Finnish Organization of Canada, has been active from 1901. It has been one of the central organizations for Finnish immigrants in Canada with politically leftist sympathies. The volume
explains the Finnish Canadian history as an integral part of Canadian statehood. Laine discusses the realities of the immigrant life concentrating especially on the turbulent periods in Canadian history of World War I and World War II, at the time when pressure
was heavy towards the immigrants and their status in the country was questioned.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">All these and many other transnational aspects are carefully considered by Laine, who also writes a more general analysis of the post World War II decades, a time when the immigrant population had created new generation,
and new immigrants with differing, more educated background began to pour in.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

på bästa tänkbara sätt till det finländska samhället. Här har skolorna en oerhört viktig uppgift i integreringsprocessen.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">International Degree Students – A survey of studying, working and living in Turku<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">International degree students are an important resource for Finland and Turku. The number of them in Turku has almost tripled since 2004. It is vital for the local economy that the students stay in Turku after their graduation
and find employment. This study examines what attracts international students to Turku, how are they integrating into Turku, what could be done to help this integration process, and finally, what do the students plan to do after their graduation.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The study is based on a survey sent to all international degree students of Åbo Akademi University, the University of Turku, Turku University of Applied Sciences and Novia University of Applied Sciences’ Turku campus.
303 students responded to the survey in September 2015.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The results of this study show that although international students seem to be very happy with their studies in Turku, many students need more help with career planning, finding internships and learning Finnish. Most
of the international students graduating in 2015/2016 had either completed an internship in Finland or had been employed in Turku. A third of the respondents had done both. Internships were found to be an extremely efficient stepping stone towards employment.
Two thirds of the respondents stated that they would prefer staying in Finland after graduation if work was available. Also, two thirds of the respondents were interested or possibly interested in becoming self-employed in Turku.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Tilastointi on keskeinen väline, jolla valtiot pyrkivät tuottamaan tietoa väestöstään ja sen liikkeistä. Kun ihmiset liikkuvat yhä enemmän Suomen valtion rajojen yli, seuraa siitä suuria haasteita luotettavana pidetylle
rekisteripohjaiselle väestötilastoinnin tavalle. Tutkimus nostaa esiin näkymättömäksi jääneen valtiollisen toiminnan, jossa Suomeen muuttaneita ulkomaalaisia kirjataan väestörekisteriin.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Kirjoittajat kysyvät, miten väestörekisterin tieto Suomessa asuvista ulkomaalaisista muodostuu valtionhallinnon paikallisissa käytännöissä ja miten se muuttuu matkalla tilastoksi. Kirjoittajat tarkastelevat tätä toimintaa
sekä viranomaisten että Suomessa asuvien ulkomaalaisten näkökulmasta. Tutkimus perustuu monipaikkaiseen havainnointiaineistoon sekä viranomaisten ja ulkomaalaisten haastatteluihin.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Kirjoittajat osoittavat, että maistraattien arkiset käytännöt ja vaihtelevat kirjauskulttuurit vaikuttavat lainsäädännön lisäksi siihen, mitä tietoja ihmisistä kirjataan rekisteriin. Tehdyillä kirjauksilla on merkittäviä
seurauksia niin ihmisille, joita ne koskevat, kuin viranomaistoiminnalle ja väestötilastollekin. Näin väestörekisteri toimii samanaikaisesti ihmisten hallinnan ja tiedontuotannon välineenä.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Tämä kirja kertoo Suomesta, Englannista ja Somaliasta Najma Yusufin silmin. Kuvaaja on nuori kansainvälinen somalialainen, kuten hän itsensä määrittelee. Najma kertoo, että uuteen paikkaan saapuessaan hän tarkkailee ihmisten
vuorovaikutussuhteita ja arkkitehtuuria. Valokuvatessaan hän on erityisesti kiinnostunut luonnosta ja väreistä. Kuvaaminen on Najmalle myös tapa pohtia kulttuurien eroja ja meitä ihmisiä yhdistäviä asioita.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
