Dear colleagues,

The Greco-Roman ideal of a good or noble death was immensely important for how death was understood in the ancient world and how dying was described in ancient biographies, histories, and hagiographies. To trace this ideal through literary history and discuss the interplay between Greco-Roman and Christian ideals, we are inviting you to an interdisciplinary conference in Helsinki, May 25–26, 2027.

Keynote speakers will be Valerie Hope, who has made groundbreaking research in this area, Helen Bond, who has brought this perspective to New Testament Studies, Nienke Vos, who brings it to hagiographies and other early Christian texts, and Rob Boddice, whose unique perspective from the history of emotions will ensure a dynamic discussion.

The call for papers is open until November 30, 2026, and we invite you both to send in an abstract and to spread the invitation to any other potential participants.
